Filter media in aquariums play crucial roles in maintaining water quality and ensuring a healthy environment for aquatic life.

  • Biological filter media provide a surface for beneficial bacteria to colonize. These bacteria break down harmful ammonia and nitrite into less harmful nitrate through the nitrogen cycle.
  • The media offer a large surface area for the growth of nitrifying bacteria (Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter species). These bacteria convert ammonia (NH3) to nitrite (NO2-) and then to nitrate (NO3-), which is less toxic and can be removed by water changes or taken up by plants.
